The maximum recorded size is 3.5 cm. Both sexes are primarily yellow with dark green or black iridescent spots on the sides and back, but as with other members of the genus, sexual dimorphism occurs in mature fish, with males being more brightly colored than females. Males may also have a dark stripe down the center of their pale bellies and iridescent "eye wrinkle" patterns that females lack. Females are more rounded, tend to be slightly larger than males, and may or may not have smaller spots between the larger dark markings.
Diet and Lifestyle
The diet of C. travancoricus in the wild includes cladocerans, rotifers, copepods, and insects, as well as diatoms.

Unlike many pufferfish species, which are solitary and fiercely territorial, the dwarf pufferfish Carinotetraodon travancoricus is a schooling fish in the wild. But like all puffers, they can be aggressive, especially toward creatures smaller than themselves.
